COPPERHEAD SLINGER
|
PERSONALITY
Bought from the Greasy Creek Thoroughbreds dispersal, Copper has been a special sort of headache from the moment she stepped foot on the grounds. With a personality better suited for a cat than a racehorse, she's got so many quirks and triggers that one practically needs a manual to keep from upsetting her and getting hurt. Copper is boss mare in the field and she'll accept nothing less, up to and including physical violence if anyone tries to usurpe her throne. It's a good thing she doesn't need to be hind shod, because no one needs to hand this filly a weapon. One-on-one, Copper still acts the demanding queen, walking on a lead as if there's no human there at all - it's her pace or she throws a fit, forced to acknowledge she's been tethered. She likes being groomed, to an extent at least. She thrashes her tail and kicks when her belly's being groomed, though otherwise seems to enjoy the attention. She'll even go so far as to bite if she feels someone's done too soon - though she'll also bite if she's done with all of it, so it's hard to tell sometimes. She doesn't handle being stalled well, needing her domain to lord over, so she circles and fusses and screams pretty much the whole time she's left in a stall on her own. It's best to do your business with her then turn her straight back out if possible. At the track... well, she gets hand walked an awful lot for everyone's sanity, and tend to get shipped in the day of the race whenever possible. She handles the sudden change a heck of a lot better than she handles being cooped up. Perhaps the most annoying part of Copper is that... well... it's hard to fault her, all things considered. When it's time to work, she puts her money where her mouth is, and she performs time and again. It's hard to fault a queen her eccentricity when she's exceptional at ruling, after all. And Copper is damn good at lording over a racetrack.
LEG TYPE: STALKER
Copper is all flash and flamboyance on race day. She doesn't care that she's plain and bay - she couldn't draw more attention if she was covered in chrome. Her head is held high and regal in the paddock, always standing just so, seeming to only just deign to allow a rider onto her back. She's unflappable and proud during the post parade, looking on the antics of the other horses like they are scum under her hoof, disappointed yet unsurprised by their undignified behavior. She loads smoothly into the gate, and it's only in the stillness before the break that she tenses, teeth clenched and muscles wound. Surprisingly, she doesn't bolt from the gate to take control of the field. Instead, she exits at exactly the speed she means to, falling five or six lengths off of the pace, taking her time to pick out her real competition. When it's time to move, Copper will generally take a cue, but it's a bad idea to get after her too aggressively down the stretch. She seems to have the uncanny ability to gauge her speed for the chase, and when she closes in it's at exactly the speed for a flourishing finish. She will accept nothing less.
