HELEN'S FOLLY
|
PERSONALITY
Helen of Troy was 'the face that launched a thousand ships,' a woman of beauty and passion that captivated the hearts and minds of those that knew her. Her name was given to this lovely first daughter of Santana's Legend, and it continued to fit her perfectly as she matured. Helen is a strongly built filly, athletic and bold with a swinging walk and pretty eye. She's not perfect, however, and never would have made a good sale horse. She toes out in front and has an offset knee, which could have been a deal-breaker for some. However, despite the fact she has a paddling and unorthodox run because of it, she's figured out how to work around her conformation. On the ground, Helen is as meticulous and clean as any horse can be expected to be. She prefers only to roll on dry ground, and stays away from muddy spots in the field. She gets really cranky if her stall gets dirty, so keeping her freshly bedded is a must. The trade-off is that she's always glistening, even if she's not being groomed all of the time, and she draws the eye wherever she goes. Which works for her, of course, because she's a wonderfully friendly sort. She can be a bit nervous in new places and around new noises, so it's important to introduce her to the track well ahead of her run. Once she's settled in and has been properly schooled in the paddock, she's more likely to be excitable but not nervous come race day. When she is spooked or edgy, she's got a bad habit of rearing. She's not as bad under saddle and she never strikes out, but it's definitely something that keeps her handlers on their toes for fear of her getting loose. Under saddle she's very well-behaved, and the biggest danger comes if there's a loose horse or someone else spooks. She can be very reactive in a flight-over-fight manner, and it can take a few minutes to get her settled again. She does her best if she's around other, confident horses, at least if she's in a new situation. She takes well to a calming influence, and genuinely enjoys the companionship of other horses. As quirky as she is, Helen is a wonderful example of where an oddball breeding can lead - to a strong horse with a will to overcome.
LEG TYPE: MID-PACK
Early on, Helen had a bad habit of rearing in the gates. However, after a lot of work to teach her that they're not going to eat her, she loads edgily but willingly. She can be a bit distracted by her own nerves when the gates open, so she breaks poorly about half of the time. However, as long as she can get in the mix running alongside other horses, she's perfectly content to cruise along for the majority of the race. It can take some urging to get her to leave the group she's running with once she's comfortable, so about three furlongs from the end of the race her jockey starts trying to shake her up. Once she finally gets the idea and starts moving, she is more than willing to put on the afterburners. She seems to think it's all a game, and loves making a chase and run for the front. She will match every ounce of drive her jockey throws into her, and it will make all the difference in getting her over the wire first.
