FATHER CHRISTMAS
PERSONALITY
For a horse to be named Father Christmas, one expects a certain something of his temperament. One would certainly not be disappointed here. Saint was brought in as a yearling, then named after the staff spent some time with him. If one didn't know he was a colt, he'd be taken for a gelding every time. Saint's a sleepy sort of horse, apt to nod off when being groomed and prone to plodding along behind whoever's leading him. Nothing seems to get under his skin on the farm, and he's a wonderful companion to pair up with any new horse off the track or weanling that needs a buddy. He doesn't really fight back, but he ignores the other horse's antics until they basically just get bored and leave him alone. He's a very easy horse to work with, and will basically give you his entire heart and trust in return for a good scratch. He is forgiving to his people, but he can seem to tell a bad egg from one meeting - if Saint is acting jumpy or nervous at the end of the lead, you'd better take a second look at who's on the other end. Saint's only real fault is that he seems to be incapable of keeping track of his body, even though he's not particularly big. He's bad about maintaining a bubble, often stepping on toes or knocking you with his head. Luckily he's not a particularly fast-moving horse... on the ground, anyway. He's a push-button dream under saddle, and finally starts showing some pep when he's ridden out onto the turf. He's an absolute workhorse on the track, giving everything he's got in every work without any quit. He's persistent in company, picking away at a workmate's lead without panic or stress. With his demeanor, he's the last horse one would think to worry about in a race, but you'd better watch out...
LEG TYPE: GRADUAL CLOSER
Saint breaks from the gate like there's no hurry at all, taking an extra stride or two to get to speed, often putting him trailing the field by four or five lengths. A lot of horses would panic over the defecit, but Saint is cool as a cucumber, looking at the ground that needs to be gained and ponying up for a long, grinding haul. His move basically starts immediately, and he starts cutting the inches away stride by stride, slowly moving on the field and creeping past competitors. While he's certainly not a 'come from the clouds' sort and he's nerve-wracking as hell to watch, he is efficient with his movements and wastes no energy getting to where he needs to be. He tends to be two or three lengths from the leaders rounding into the stretch, and that's where he's at his most surprising. That crawling move tends to make other jockeys sleep on him, assume he's got no time left to get to the lead at that pace. Saint has one last trick in his bag, though, and always saves a little in the tank for strong, surprising move in the final strides. He kicks up his tail and absolutely drives, leaving everything he's got on the track in his pursuit. If Saint doesn't get the win, it's never because of a lack of effort. He's truly a star, and a pleasure to any that behold him.
