Lad is... well, he's a bit of a diva. With some fillies you expect high maintenance, but with colts it a little more rare. And yet, Lad is one of the most prissy creatures to call Valkyrie home. He hates being dirty, and would rather be beaten to death than walk through a puddle. That said, he's definitely not much of a mudder. It's like pulling teeth trying to get him to cross the dirt track to get to the turf one when it's wet. Even in the field he alternates between huddling miserably under a tree and screaming at the gate for someone to bring him in if it's raining. However, he also doesn't like to be inside for any real amount of time or he'll start kicking up a fuss there too as well. He's got a very delicate zone where he's happy and trying to cater to his needs is exhausting. Therefore he's generally in a discontented middle ground where he's just tolerating the conditions he's in. He's the type of horse to kick up way more of a fuss than is really called for in a given situation. Lad gives a very dramatic response to any sort of change in his surroundings. A new bucket in the corner? Panic! His stall gets moved? Panic even more! Yet it's all pretty superficial, since he never works up a sweat or gets truly scared. He's just very dramatic. If another horse spooks and runs, don't count on him to be the voice of reason - he'll take right off with them, scared of whatever phantom thing that may have scared them. He's a pain to work with on the ground, especially with something as simple as leading - he pays far more attention to himself and his surroundings, so he's constantly stepping on feet and bumping into his handler. Under saddle he's not much different. He switches his tail constantly, something that would make him a very poor show horse. He has to be kept under relatively tight rein, since his little antics could easily throw a rider if they weren't paying attention. He's apt to rear, but not so much that he'll go over - he's careful with his balance. He'd got indignant pride when it comes to other horses. He pretty much ignores horses that are bigger than him or pushy in some way - he'll just walk away and pretend they're not there. He can be a bully with horses smaller and more timid than him, but he likes to have his posse, so he doesn't actually drive them away. His competitive drive is totally built by a need to dominate through his own insecurities. He truly hates losing, plus he really hates having dirt in his face. So he'll fight like the diva he is to come out on top.
LEG TYPE: FRONTRUNNER/PRECEDER
Lad goes into the gate easily but with a lot of fuss. When he is settled, he has a rare moment of concentration because he knows what happens if he comes out late. He goes straight to the front when the gates open, getting clear of the chunks of dirt and turf that would fly in his face otherwise. He won't fight for the lead, but if he sits back, it's always to the outside as to be clear of debris. He always makes his move to the outside. When his rider shakes him up, he stretches those long legs and guns for the front with enough time to open a gap if the opportunity is available. He's a showman and lives for the cheers, so the crowd on the stretch only fuels his drive.
