An undeniably striking mare, Tina has been an enigma from birth. She grew slowly as a foal, and was sickly through her first year of life. She frequently got infections and had a scary bout of laminitis when she was just getting ready to run her debut. The rotation, luckily, wasn't terrible, and through careful treatment and care she returned to peak form. After that, they had to take the time to get her back in shape, and once she was finally ready to go... well, the staff ran into a problem. Tina, they found, had developed a deep aversion to the gates during her years at home. It took months of coaxing, training, and cowboy hoodoo to finally get her prepared. And then, finally, she was ready to run at four.
Tina is an odd duck, but she's pleasant enough to work with. Aside from being a pretty pasture ornament and companion when needed, she's needed nearly constant care and most of the staff have grown very attached to her. She sunburns easily and started on dusk-to-dawn turnout early in life, but it worked well because she doesn't particularly like other horses in general. She tolerates weanlings and yearlings, but older horses with established personalities tend to rub her the wrong way. This has made her ideal to spend time with the sales fillies, who are on night turnout to keep them from bleaching. She's like an older mother hen, leading them around and only being cranky half of the time. She also hates being bathed, which is a huge frustration for the staff as she's the type to quickly find any mud wallow and go to work on it. She kicks and charges trying to get away from a hose, so it's all warm buckets of water to keep her happy on the farm. Under saddle she's an old hat, as if fitting. She's pretty much bombproof, running in a race like she's been doing it her whole life. She might be getting a late start at a career, but the staff is confident she's got all of the talent she needs to have a good career.
LEG TYPE: FRONTRUNNER/PRECEDER
Tina is still rather skittish around the gate, but once out of them she's all business. She's got the level head to confidently lead the field under her jockey's pace, but is also very comfortable hanging a few lengths back if some hot-head is looking for the spot. She's very matter-of-fact in her stride, moving easily and freely as if she's just excited to be able to do so. It's when she's shaken up to make her move that her energy really rises, and suddenly she goes from shadowy participant to lightning striking. She runs up the outside, irritably turning back any challengers until the speeds past the finish.
