PROXIMA CENTAURI
PERSONALITY
Proxy is an interesting filly, and all-told it's no real surprise that she started her racing career late. Proxy isn't a particularly large filly, but she's had horrific ground manners since she was a baby. Her dam died at foaling, and without a nurse mare available at the time, Proxy became our very own bottle baby. Try as they might, they couldn't keep the fiery filly from stomping on toes and kicking out at the grooms like they were foal playmates in the field. By the time she was weaned, Proxy was a nightmare. Instead of being cuddly and loving like some, she simply had no respect for her handlers and a hard-headed stubbornness to boot. When she doesn't like something, she'll flat-out refuse to do it, and nothing you ca do can change her mind for her. She took months to be ridden without bucking the entire session, and months again to stand in the starting gates. She's a smart filly, but she simply didn't want to work. We were about to give up on her altogether when Cole Mavecci ordered a full veterinary workup, just in case. To their surprise, Proxy was diagnosed with a bilateral fracture to her withers - the pain on both sides made it so she never appeared lame, but the pain made her very ill-tempered when being ridden. It was hard saying exactly when it happened, but she had a penchant for rearing in the field - so the working theory is that she must have gone over at some point. A few months of stall rest and it was like Proxy was a whole new animal. While she still has horrible ground manners and can't get along with other horses to save her life, Proxy has a new joy for being out under saddle. She loves the interaction and she's smart as a whip, taking in the world around her with bright eyes. As much of a pain as she is on the ground, Proxy has good manners under saddle and loves to compete when head-to-head with her stablemates. She also loves to hack on the trails, and took to water her first time like a fish - translating, unsurprisingly, to being quite the accomplished soft track runner. She loves the splash and spray of the water off of a soaked track, as well as the rain that scatters along her back. She's a singularly unique animal for the Valkyrie staff, but they wouldn't have this speedy filly any other way.
LEG TYPE: FRONTRUNNER
Proxy loads in the gate now like a pro, eagerly pushing against the front of the stall (and sometimes prematurely breaking through). She breaks like a shot when the bells ring, launching herself with powerful strides to the head of the pack. She likes the sight of open track ahead of her, and doesn't perform well if she doesn't get a good jump. She loves the rush of leading the race, but she isn't the sort to get into a fist fight for the position, either. As long as she can see that open track, she'll share the lead if she's not crowded. However, she's also the sort that can get distracted and start goofing off if she's too far ahead on her own, so it's important that she has another horse on her heels right up until the time for the final kick, her furious move for the wire.
